Handling
It is
easy to hurt your back, or to suffer a repetitive strain injury
when you are:
- carrying
piles of plates;
- pushing
or pulling trolleys;
- bending
to pick up objects;
- balancing
trays;
- lifting
baskets of dirty dishes;
- reaching
over counters and hot boxes;
- stretching
across tables; and
- leaning
through a drive through window to serve customers.
Things
you can do to minimise the risk.
- Use
smaller trays and baskets.
- Don't
carry too many plates and glasses at a time.
- Use
a waiter's cloth to protect your arms when carrying hot
plates or trays.
- Ask
your employer to install outdoor tables and chairs permanently,
so you don't have to set them up and pull them down every
day.
- Ask
your employer to re-design drive-throughs so you don't have
to stretch across counters or lean through windows.
