Manual Handling

It is easy to hurt your back, or to suffer a repetitive strain injury when you are:

  • carrying piles of plates;
  • pushing or pulling trolleys;
  • bending to pick up objects;
  • balancing trays;
  • lifting baskets of dirty dishes;
  • reaching over counters and hot boxes;
  • stretching across tables; and
  • leaning through a drive through window to serve customers.
Things you can do to minimise the risk.
  • Use smaller trays and baskets.
  • Don't carry too many plates and glasses at a time.
  • Use a waiter's cloth to protect your arms when carrying hot plates or trays.
  • Ask your employer to install outdoor tables and chairs permanently, so you don't have to set them up and pull them down every day.
  • Ask your employer to re-design drive-throughs so you don't have to stretch across counters or lean through windows.
