Clean Up

Cleaning is part of normal routine.

Hazards that you may face are :

  • biological waste;
  • sharps; and
  • hazardous substances.
Biological Waste.
During clean-up, you may come into contact with contaminated waste

Things you can do to minimise the risk:

  • Use personal protective equipment, such as gloves and a face mask;
  • Place waste in specially marked bins.
  • Maintain a high standard of personal hygiene when working around contaminated waste; eg. Wash hands well immediately afterwards).
  • Cover cuts and abrasions to prevent exposure to bacteria.
Sharps.
Penetrating wounds from sharp objects can allow infection to enter your body

Things you can do to minimise the risk:

  • Follow the company's safe work practices.
  • Wearing all personal protective equipment that is provided.
  • Report any injuries immediately.
Hazardous Substances.
Hazardous substances (e.g. oven cleaner) are often used for cleaning in a kitchen.

Things you can do to minimise the risk

  • Ask your employer to replace hazardous substances with safer products.
  • Make sure you understand the risks associated with a substance. To do this, ask to see the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), which should come with the product. It will give you information on the hazards, and steps you can take to manage risks.
  • Make sure all containers are labelled with information about a product's name, and its safe use.
